Tom Tobacco KE7NCJ (SK) coordinated ham operators for the NevadaDay Parade for the past 5 years. We were saddened to loseTom. Tom was very active supporting his community in so many ways.
The Nevada Day Parade has been supported by ham radio operators for over 15 years. The parade takes place this year on Saturday October 26th. A ham operator is assigned to each of the announcer stands along the parade route. As changes to the parade lineup is confirmed by the parade director, the information is sent to all announcer station hams. He/She then gives the information to the announcer so they can modify the script they are reading over their PA systems. We are also there to support communications in the event of an emergency.
If you are interested in supporting this very important event please have the following:
Dual band HT with gain antenna, 5 watts. extra battery. Headsets are recommended.
Radio programmed for 147.270 + 156.7 (primary), 442.900 + 156.7 (Alt), and 146.550 Simplex.
Comfortable camp chair
Something to drink and snack
Dress for the weather
Green ARES Vest if you have one
Be at the assigned location by 0900 hours to meet your announcer, and do radio check with net control. Tactical call signs are used based on location. The parade starts at 1000 hours. Depending on how it moves and the number of entries it should end around 1300.
A pancake breakfast is available for the volunteers at the Plaza Hotel and Event Center - 801 South Carson street. Many streets are closed along the parade route. Parking early near your assignment is recommended. Parking later in the morning is at a premium, so the earlier the better for a shorter walk.
